Steelhead

Ed is pictured with a few of the Steelhead he caught float fishing on the Muskegon River today.  Fishing was surprisingly good for May 20 and there were no other boats on the water.

Mid May Steelhead

Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon River is hanging on but numbers have dropped.  The best days are lower traffic days with limited areas holding numbers of fish.  There are just enough fish on spawning gravel to keep some biters hanging out behind them and that is where we have been getting it done float fishing.  Most of the fish we are catching are drop backs or ones that have been pushed off gravel by boat traffic but I have noticed a very limited number of new arrivals over the last few days.  We will fish as long as there are willing biters available but it looks like the end is very near.  I am leaving for Alaska on June 12 this year and will return around September 8.  I have some openings for King Salmon and Fall Steelhead fishing when I return so if you want to get in on some of the best fishing of the year book it soon as days will fill up fast.  Openings are September 14, 15, 21, 28, 29 and 30.  October 5, 6, 8 and 11.  November 2, 10, 16, 17, 20, 22, 23, 24, 26, 28, 29 and 30.  Call (616)204-4999 or e-mail jeff@muskegonriverguide.com to book a fall date or two.  If you are trying to book any of those dates between June 12 and September 8 please allow a little extra time for a response due to a very busy schedule and a 4 hour time difference while I am in Alaska.

Here are a few pictures from the last couple days on the Muskegon River.

May Steelhead

Steelhead fishing is still pretty good but most of the fish we are catching are drop backs, there are a few pre spawn fish around which should keep us going for a while but there are more leaving than coming.  Boat traffic has lightened a bit but is still  pretty high according to the calendar.  I am taking bookings for Fall Salmon fishing on the Muskegon, Pere Marquette and Manistee Rivers.  Float fishing skein and casting hardware for Kings is a blast and these dates book early so don't wait until it's too late.  Fall Steelhead dates are also filling up fast so if you want in on some great November Steelhead action get in touch with me soon.  Here are a few pics from the last couple days on the Muskegon.

Muskegon River Steelhead

Steelhead fishing is still pretty good on the Muskegon River.  Water level is dropping slowly currently at 3,900 cfs. and clearing.  The majority of the fish are dropbacks or actively spawning with a few fresh fish around.  We should have fishable numbers of Steelhead in the system atleast to the 20th of May.  Below are a few pictures from yesterday's morning and afternoon trips and today.

Spring Steelhead

The Muskegon River has dropped but is still running high at 5,200 cfs. with a good stain and temp is in the high 40's.  Boat traffic is heavy for the first of May but that is to be expected after most folks did not get to fish the normal "prime time" of April.   We should have good fishing for the next few weeks and maybe longer depending on how long the dropbacks hang out.  Steelhead fishing has been very good and here are a couple pics from the yesterday and today.

5/1/2013  Pete and Chris with one of our double headers today.

5/1/2013  CJ and Pete with another double.

5/1/2013  The verdict was two at a time is better than one.  Fishing was on fire today.
