Michigan Steelhead Fishing

Despite low, clear water conditions the Muskegon River has been fishing well for Steelhead.  We could really use some rain to put some water and color in the river.  Boat traffic has been fairly light but will surely change as the calendar hits November.   Pictures from yesterday and today include Brian and Bria and Rick and Fred.

Fall Steelhead Fishing

Steelhead fishing has been good on the Muskegon River.  Water level is low at about 1,400 cfs. and very clear, temp is in the high 40's.  The wind over the last few days has put a ton of leaves into the river but the good thing is they will be gone soon.  Pictures is Ed, Fritz, Gary and Brian from yesterday's morning and afternoon trips and Meg, Todd and Ben from today.

From the UK to the Muskegon River

Aaron, Andy, Mike, Steve, Luke, Roger and Brian are here from England and Ireland along with Craig from Michigan for their annual 8 day Steelhead trip on the Muskegon River.  Today was day 6 and the boys have had nothing but great fishing so far.  There are some big Steelhead this year with at least one of the four boats landing one in the teens each day this week.  The fish are gorging on the abundance of Salmon eggs this year which should keep dropping into November.  I am looking forward to what the rest of this Steelhead season will bring.  Below are a few pictures from the last few days.

Muskegon River Steelhead

Steelhead fishing should start shaping up here on the Muskegon River very soon.  There are a few fish around right now but numbers are yet to come, this low water is not helping new fish move in.  I have been targeting Steelhead for the last week now and we are getting a couple a day as long as there is not much boat traffic to contend with.  The fish we are catching are in very good shape and will put you and your tackle to the test.  There are loads of Salmon spawning and still in  pools in the upper river above Newaygo, the egg drop should last easily into November this fall.  We should have a great fall Steelhead season ahead of us so call or e-mail if you want to get in on the action.  I have openings in early December for fall Steelhead.  Below is Ed, Fritz and Chad from yesterday and today.

Kings and Steelhead

The Muskegon River is up a little to 1,400 cfs. and still in the mid 60's for water temp.  There are good numbers of King Salmon in the river along with a few Steelhead.  Most of the Salmon are still in deep water but more start to spawn each day, the further you go up river the more spawners you find which also holds true for the chrome fish feeding on their eggs.  Here a few shots of yesterday afternoon's action.

Muskegon River Salmon

There are already good numbers of Salmon in the Muskegon River this fall and more are on the move.  The river is low and clear and water temp is in the mid 60's which is high for October.  Once we get a drop in water temp down into the 50's we should see a decent push of fall Steelhead follow all these Kings looking for an easy meal of eggs, which should be plentiful this year.  We have been fishing eggs under floats for Salmon with a little back bouncing mixed in and we should have another week to ten days of good egg fishing bringing us right into Steelhead time.  I am booked out thru November aside from the 30th but still have plenty of early December dates available for Fall Steelhead for anyone interested.  Dan brought his wife Robin along with him for this year's Salmon trip and she did very well for her first time float fishing for Kings, below are a couple pictures from their two day trip on the Muskegon River.

What a way to start, Robin's first fish on day one was 28 lbs!!!
